Confessions of a priest

Confession. The time when you confess your sins, perform your penance and are absolved by a priest. One of the common questions I get a lot is "how can I know my confession is truly a secret?" Honestly? Most confessions are so routine and ordinary, we don't even remember them. Oh, I pay attention except the other day when I started nodding off, but there is rarely anything memorable to repeat. Not that I would even if it was memorable...but it's difficult to blab when you don't remember one confession to the next. They all just blur together.

Regardless though, a confession IS safe from being shared under any circumstances. Confess to murder? I won't tell. I'll urge you to turn yourself in, I'll give you a penance that you might consider harsh or unfair...but I won't tell the police. And the police cannot ask me either. It's called the Seal of Confession. I cannot be subpoenaed to divulge a confession in court. It is inadmissible as evidence. There are laws protecting priests and our parishioners on this matter.

Even priests go to confession as well. We rotate who hears confession when, because the priest hearing the confession has almost always been to confession almost immediately prior to hearing others. Even priests are not free from sin, we are still mortal men.

It does perhaps limit dinnertime conversation, but not significantly. Not that I've been eating a proper dinner the past few weeks. School is over for now, but it is still Christmas and I am busier than ever, even though I am devoting all my time at the moment to church duties. I have things for school still to work on, my classes for next semester to prepare for, but with only a couple days before Christmas, there is nothing except the church.

After midnight mass is over, I will go home with my parents for Christmas day. There is no morning mass on Friday, to allow us to be with our family and friends on the holiday (plus, since everyone goes at midnight, no one goes at 8am!). I am looking forward to being able to sleep in, hopefully. And of course, family.

end of semester craziness

The last official day of classes is tomorrow and exams begin Wednesday next week. The classes I take ended yesterday and the classes I teach ended today. The nice thing at least, is that I don't take any exams. I just have papers. Lots and lots of papers. My Latin class has a final, written exam and my history class has the option of either taking a written exam or writing a 15 page term paper, due the day of the final. I suspect they will most likely choose the written exam.

Tomorrow...is devoted to me. And grading term papers. So...maybe not really me at all. I'll splurge on fancy coffee.

Sorry to all on here that I've neglected, it wasn't intentional. Unfortunately, things all happened at once despite my best efforts not to procrastinate and get things done. I have to say, I am looking forward to the end of the semester, if only so I can dedicate the winter break to catching up on things I am remiss on at the church. That is my life, one big struggle to stay on top of things. I'm not complaining though. I love being busy and wouldn't be happy if there wasn't something to do. Every so often though, even I need a break and I am about at that point now.

Thanksgiving

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I certainly did and I ate waaaaaaay too much, but that is okay. That's why Thanksgiving only comes once a year! As usual, it was a zoo at my parents house - my parents of course, 6 kids, 2 in-laws, 2 sets in parents-in-law, and 2 grand kids. 16 total, though I'm not sure the kids count yet. There was plenty of food though, which is really what matters and the parade and the game we on TV. It's all very Norman Rockwell, but there was no snow.

While my mother and sisters braved Black Friday (why?!?!?!), the guys hung the lights not just at one house - oh no. We had to do my parents and my brother Alasdair's house. I'm so glad no one else has houses yet, I don't think there is enough daylight to get them all up for more than two houses! It helps that my parents are incredibly organized, but with 6 kids, I think they had to be. It was a lot of fun though and hard work.

Tomorrow, Advent begins, which is the holiday leading up to Christmas. It is one of my favorites and I brought Advent calendars for everyone when I went home. If you want an Advent calendar, they are for sale in the chruch store. We also spent Saturday getting the church ready for Advent and Christmas of course, putting the tree up, changing the decorations and whatnot. We put the Nativity scene out of course, but there is no baby Jesus (yet).

This year is going so quickly! In only a couple weeks it'll be time for finals at school, then Christmas and New Year! Wow!

So, what are you thankful for, Revere?

Introduction

Well...it's not myspace, but here I am. I draw the line at myspace, despite my littlest sister's protests. Facebook...well, I have one, but only because my little sister apparently can't communicate any other way. That was our compromise - I'd get a facebook and learn text messaging and she'd acknowledge my existence. I'm not telling her about this site. She'll just gloat. Oh, teenagers. What would we do without them, other than think we were cool?

I am Father Warrick Delaney, and I've been here since July at Most Holy Redeemer, but it's taken me this long to join this website. I am slow, I know. Like I said, my little sister reminds me of this constantly. In my defense, I stay pretty busy with the church and I am a doctoral student at BU. I started working on a doctorate of theology back in August and I teach two classes there in addition to attending classes.

I am also the oldest of 6 kids - my family lives about an hour north of here just over the border in New Hampshire, they enjoy harassing me every chance they get. I encourage this. When I do manage a minute of free time (and it really is about a minute) I like soccer, 90's grunge and alternative rock and traveling.
